Experiential Learning: The World As Classroom
As an instructor with Columbia College for 19 years and previously a substitute instructor with the Chicago Public Schools, I’ve had the opportunity to teach hundreds of students across various educational levels and socioeconomic backgrounds, having taught general studies to children as well as business concepts to adult learners. I use the city as my classroom and canvas, as learning is best absorbed and retained by experience. Through this type of learning, students are challenged to discover and understand differing philosophies and methodology via trips that are in the field and virtual. Students typically find parallels to their aspirations and experiences and find enthusiasm in the interconnectedness. This broadens their perspective and encourages the inner genius. Students are then better apt to build on learned principles, take risks, create new concepts and re-invent old foundations.
